Time & Attendance Mobile App Redesign

The Workforce Tools mobile app enables hourly Home Depot hourly Associates and their managers to manage work schedules from their mobile device. This self-service tool offers 200,000+ employees and Leadership efficiencies and convenience, freeing them up to take care of customers.

The Challenge

Existing mobile app was difficult to use and lacked critical features.

Feedback from Home Depot’s workforce informed us that user adoption of the existing mobile app could improve if certain (critical) features were added. Additionally, long term the mobile app’s current framework could not keep pace with the scheduling, timekeeping and attendance demands of associates, so the team explored a new platform and an improved user experience.

My Role

I began with user research to better understand the problem. Feedback came from the app stores, contextual interviews and a participatory design exercise where associates could use ‘design’ the app the way it worked best for them. A competitive analysis provied market context and basic user expectations.

Once the user’s goals, needs and pain points were understood, I created a journey map to illustrate their thoughts and emotions as they went through their scheduling tasks. A sitemap and user flows were created to understand use cases and helped prioritize work for the team.

Finally, I sketched the mobile designs first on paper, then moved to medium fidelity wireframes. These were shared with the team and iterated on until we had a set of designs to use for an interactive protoype in usability testing.

The Outcome

Results from the usability tests were positive and addressed most requests discovered in the initial research. 8/8 participants were able to successfully complete the tasks in the usability test.

I provided annotated wireframes to the development team, regularly pairing 1:1 with an engineer to ensure it was built as designed, or to make compromises as needed. The app is currently in development and is expected to increase user adoption and provide convenience and efficiency to associates and management.

I really like the sleek and personalized interface. Everything I use most is now easy to access.
